Fall Color Cruise & Island Festival 2006

I took 145 pictures at this year's festival. I presume I was kept pretty busy with other tasks, because it is an unusually small number for me over a three day span. We had six re-enactors; Kenn (MLHE founder), Sarah, Lauren, Donna, Mike and David. Randd had commitments elsewhere, and was not there to anchor our camp at the north end. One of the few years he did not, after Michigan Living History Encounters was the primary sponsor.

We had a Teaching & Sharing Centers corporate tent set up right across from the encampment this year, illustrating the multiple aspects of the non-profit beyond just MLHE.

But, what really set 2006 apart from other years was setting up the whole thing in a snowstorm. I recall the snow was periodically blowing almost sideways with the wind gusting so strongly. There was no time that day for any picture taking at all. In fact, there was still accumulated snow the next morning when the festival officially opened. I took this photo of the milk jug on one of our display tables about an hour before the start. I did so specifically to illustrate the depth of the snow remaining.

The  above images were taken on Friday October 13th. I stopped taking pictures that day at 8:59 a.m. Even though the official festival start time was ten o'clock, historically, elementary school classes started showing up just after nine. Most of our re-enactors were not retired, and worked full time jobs on weekdays. Honestly, it might have been just Kenn and I on Friday. That would account for no later in the day photos. We would have both been actively involved with visitors all day.

Saturday was when we had our full group of six re-enactors all present at the same time. The images below were taken on the 14th. Having enough volunteers usually freed up my time to photograph. In fact, as you will see, I took a number of shots out on the river from a canoe. Having both time and the availability of the canoe allowed for some unique perspectives of both our encampment, and the rest of the festival.

All of the above images are of our re-enactors, or the encampment displays. I took my first picture of something other than Michigan Living History Encounters at about a quarter to one on Saturday. There are still a couple of photographs of our setup from the canoe, but most of what follows is the rest of the festival.

The images which follow, and wrap up this page, were all taken on Sunday, the last day of the 2006 festival. There were only four of us available that day. Kenn, Sarah, and Lauren (re-enactors) in camp. I was helping as needed, plus handling any questions about the Teaching & Sharing Center 501c3 display. This would not have left much time for wandering with my camera. Except for a few of the passing riverboat, all of the shots from Sunday are of the Michigan Living History Encounters encampment. Then the year it snowed had passed.
